Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology

The Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology is designed to cover all state academic requirements for licensure, Section 4980.37 and Section 4980.40 of the Business and Professional Code of the State of California, to qualify students to become Marriage and Family Therapists. In addition to providing the knowledge base to prepare students for success in the California state licensure process, the program is enriched by the integration of Christian spirituality with a rigorous study of psychology. The faculty complements their professional excellence and experience with a spiritual commitment to their courses and their students. The graduates of Trinity College of Graduate Studies enter their profession uniquely qualified to help clients. The Master of Arts course, for many students, is a stepping-stone toward the doctorate in psychology. For entrance to the Psy.D. program, it is required that you submit a formal letter of petition and pass the written and oral candidacy exams.

Participation in the Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology practicum program and the requirement for individual psychotherapy provide crucial experience for students’ professional development. Following the completion of practicum hours and academic coursework is an exam process, consisting of a written comprehensive exam and a clinical oral exam by a faculty committee.

Students who have done graduate work elsewhere may have as many as nine quarter units accepted in lieu of courses required in the Master of Arts, Counseling Psychology program, provided the Department Chair finds that the transfer courses are equivalent to those in the program. Students follow a preferred sequence of courses, for example Psy 575, Psychology and Christian Spirituality, Psy 500, Life Span Development, Psy 533, Comparative Personality Theory, and Psy 532 Psychopathology, to optimize the learning and development of the student.
